AmeriCorps Positions

State AmeriCorps positions involve direct service working hands-on with students in our afterschool programs, partner schools, and summer programs. AmeriCorps member serve on different contracts, ranging from 300 hours to 1700 hours. Check out our current opportunities below. Join an innovative afterschool model pairing an intensive service-learning curriculum, a community cultural partner, and a high needs school to change the outcomes for students. Help students learn to use philanthropy as a tool to enhance social-emotional competencies, develop character and leadership skills, and support academic outcomes.

Position: Global Game Changers Children’s Education Initiative, Inc. (GGC) is seeking Kentucky State AmeriCorps Members to serve as implementors of an intentional, afterschool expanded learning program.

Duration: 900 Hours

  • September 1, 2020 – May 31, 2021 (flexible end date after 5/9/20)
  • Built in Sick Time

Compensation: $13,047.50 TOTAL

$10,000 over course of service

Upon completion of service = $3,047.50 Education Award

Program Details:

Make an impact in the lives of young people in the community by becoming a lead educator for Global Game Changers’ unique afterschool expanded learning program. Students join this free program and call a local cultural site their home base from 4:15 – 6:15 twice a week. There, they learn how they can become real-life superheroes dedicated to making the world a better place. All the while, our students enjoy enriching curriculum, regular presentations about the cultural site, field trips, and opportunities to develop their talents with real-life practitioners. Ultimately, students put together and deliver their own service project based on how they can use their talents to help a cause they care about. Three classrooms (K-1, 2-3, 4-5) host approximately 20 students each, with intentional support by school liaisons and college-age mentors. Lead educators receive intentional training in competencies useful to the teaching process, including but not limited to trauma-informed care, program quality, CPR, and implicit bias. General Duties: 900 Hour TeacherCorps Members will serve as Educators at an In-Residence program at a specific cultural site. This responsibility includes but is not limited to facilitating:

What You’ll Do

  • Work as part of a team of educators at your site towards providing the best experience for your students
  • Help a classroom of 20 students to discover their individual superpowers to make a difference
  • Receive in-classroom support from University of Louisville students, and support their growth as educators
  • Give students the tools to manage their behavior
  • Support your students’ growth outside of your classroom
  • Complete 1200 hours of service over the course of your term, starting September 1st and ending either May 31, June 30, or July 31.
  • Flexible Schedule: 3:00 – 6:30 Monday – Thursday is non-negotiable. We will work with you to create a regular calendar for your term of service.

The Fine Print

Program Details:

Hosted In-Residence at each community cultural partners site, this yearlong expanded learning program utilizes the Global Game Changers curriculum, community cultural partner exhibits and activities, fieldtrips and presentations by guest speakers, and opportunities for service to promote in-depth explorations into philanthropic causes, compassion, self-compassion, social skills, emotional regulation, and mindfulness for 50 elementary-aged students per day split between 3 classrooms. The program serves a total of 100 students from each partner school per year; 50 students attend Monday/Wednesday and 50 students attend Tuesday/Thursday. At the program’s culmination, students design and facilitate their own individual service projects, using his/her talent to serve the cause they he/she particular cares about. The In-Residence Expanded Learning Program is measured for its efficacy and impact through intentional evaluation protocol in partnership with the University of Louisville and Metro United Way. This program is provided at no cost to the students or their families.

A Glimpse into Service with GGC

AmeriCorps  VISTA Positions

AmeriCorps VISTA members are all about the work behind the scenes that allow us to build our capacity as an organization to serve more students more effectively. VISTAs commit to a year of full-time service, earning approximately $12,000/year, plus an Education Award upon successful completion of service. Check out what VISTA opportunities we have below. Member Duties : Develop the social-emotional, power, and academic skills that Pre-K through 5th Grade students need to build a pathway out of poverty, the Curriculum VISTA will build the capacity of GGC by translating the work of the previous curriculum VISTA to a one-on-one curriculum program so that it can be more easily translated to non-traditional instruction. This will enable the curriculum to be used for years after the member’s service. The VISTA will also develop and test high-quality student videos that improve the impact of the written curriculum on social-emotional outcomes.

Global Game Changers Student Empowerment Programs (GGC) use evidence-based, high-quality curriculum to bring children we serve out of poverty by closing the enrichment gap and positively impacting students social-emotional outcomes, including improved behavior leading to increased academic engagement. The Data & Impact Analyst VISTA will build the capacity of GGC by supporting the development and administration of a QED study of in-school and out-of-school programs, as well as a comparative study of the In-Residence traditional model vs. the 21st Century Community Learning Center model being piloted in the 20-21 school year.

Member Duties : The VISTA member will help build a stronger data foundation for Global Game Changers by developing a comparison study between two afterschool programs, conducting an in-depth QED study on GGC in-school programs in Title I schools, and researching academic literature to provide a stronger basis for data review. The member will work with management, volunteers and Educator board members well-versed in program evaluation.

Global Game Changers has developed a social-emotional curriculum designed to expand children’s SEL skill, power skills, and academic skills through a simple equation: MY TALENT + MY HEART = MY SUPERPOWER! We facilitate this program through in-school and out-of-school applications, with our VISTA program’s work focused on expanding and deepening our curriculum with and for students enrolled in Title I schools.

Global Game Changers’ curriculum and programs are designed to develop and enhance students’ social-emotional, power, and academic skills by helping students discover they have a unique superpower to make the world a better place: MY TALENT + MY HEART = MY SUPERPOWER! Our curriculum and programs are free to educators, and we work with in-school and out-of-school programs.

Member Duties : Global Game Changers provides high-quality free social-emotional learning curriculum and programs to students, which enhances outcomes and builds student skills. Based on events of 2020, the Non-Traditional Instruction Video Content Developer VISTA will work to build capacity of the organization to reach students in times of non-traditional instruction by creating student-facing videos that help students facilitate the curriculum to gain social-emotional, power, and academic skills. Focusing particularly on underserved students, the member will work with teachers and management to create easy-access videos for students from Title I schools.
